SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Luis Suarez scored twice to give Uruguay a 2-1 victory over England at the World Cup on Thursday, making an instant impact on his return from injury to revive his teams Group D campaign. The Liverpool striker, who hadnt played since undergoing surgery on his left knee last month, lashed in the winner in the 85th minute, after seeing his first-half opener cancelled out by Wayne Rooney. After surprisingly losing its Group D opener to Costa Rica, Uruguays qualifying chances have now been given a major lift, while Englands hopes of advancing to the round of 16 are in real jeopardy after its worst World Cup start in more than half a century. Suarez seemed to revel in inflicting Englands second successive loss in Brazil, having been punished twice by the countrys Football Association for misdemeanours, serving bans for racism and biting in the Premier League. Of Uruguays six efforts on target, five were from Suarez -- including the two that beat goalkeeper Joe Hart as Englands slack defending was exploited. "I dreamt this," Suarez said at the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo. "Im enjoying this moment, because of all I suffered, the criticism I received. So, there you go." By taking his World Cup tally to five goals, Suarez ensured that Rooneys first-ever goal in 10 matches on footballs biggest stage was in vain at his third tournament. Rooney tapped the ball home from close range in the 75th minute after connecting with Glen Johnsons pass. Having also lost against Italy, England now faces the prospect of not advancing from the group stage for the first time since 1958. "We are a team that is making progress but results decide everything and both results have been negative," coach Roy Hodgson said. "Where does it leave us? I dont know. I dont quite know." Group D leader Italy and Costa Rica, who both have three points, meet for their second group game on Friday. Uruguay now has three points, while England is on zero points after consecutive defeats following its losing start to Italy. It is in the England where Suarez has stepped up a level and powered in the goals that saw him voted the Premier Leagues best player last season. And despite lacking sharpness at times, he still managed to recapture the scoring form that helped Liverpool finish second last season with 31 goals. Suarez was in the thick of the action in the opening minutes against an edgy England side. Goalkeeper Joe Harts first save came after Suarezs cross-shot was deflected off the head of Gary Cahill. "Quite frankly, for long periods of the game we kept him very quiet," Hodgson said. "We are normally used to seeing him much more active in and around our penalty area than we saw him today." When Suarez did break forward, though, he was a real menace. Suarezs first goal came in the 39th when Diego Godin picked up possession on the halfway line and sprayed it to Edinson Cavani on the left. Suarez easily evaded Phil Jagielka to head over Hart, seizing on defensive lapses just as Mario Balotelli did in Italys win. Although after several chances, Rooney ended his World Cup hoodoo it was rendered meaningless by Suarezs devastating final touch. Suarezs Liverpool teammate, England captain Steven Gerrard, tried to clear a long punt by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, and the ball glanced off the head of midfielder and back toward his own goal. Suarez ran onto it and beat Hart with a right-footed shot from about nine yards. "If this was a movie, people probably couldnt have wished for a better result, at least in Uruguay," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. Cheap NCAA Jerseys For Sale . Its not like it was Sunday and then we had an extra day to look at the film and had a whole day to really think about it. We had to move on fast to Cincinnati. So the Chiefs, officially, are in New Englands rearview mirror. Running back Jamaal Charles three touchdowns are a thing of the past. Quarterback Alex Smith missing on just six passes while dissecting New Englands secondary for 248 yards and three scores is a distant memory. The Bengals (3-0), one of only two undefeated teams in the NFL, are foremost in the minds of the Patriots. But their poor performance against Kansas City isnt entirely a lost cause. New Englands defence knows precisely what went wrong, and is looking to build off those mistakes. When you cant pinpoint what happened, you cant make any corrections from that, Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. For the most part, we see a lot of things that we do that we have no business doing; that we can fix. Its fixable. We need to fix it to get better.Thats what good football teams do, they fix things and move forward. Thats where were at; were fixing them and were moving forward, and hopefully we fix them before Sunday. The likely return of suspended cornerback Brandon Browner will surely help, if only to contain the Bengals big receiversThe Patriots (2-2) signed the hard-hitting Pro Bowler during the off-season despite knowing he would miss the firstt four games of the season due to violating the leagues substance abuse policy.ddddddddddddWere excited to have him back. Its been too long, Revis said. He brings a lot of physicality to our defence and were looking forward to that, for him to be aggressive.Browner probably will have to shake off some rust after missing the first four weeks of practice, but his height alone should be enough to counter that of Cincinnati wide receivers A.J. Green, who stands 6-foot-4, and the 6-2 Mohamed Sanu.At 6-4, 221 pounds, Browner looks more like a receiver or linebacker than a member of the secondary.I dont care who guys have at receiver, having Brandon out there will be nice, safety Devin McCourty said. Hes a bigger guy, a physical guy who lets his presence be known as soon as he steps on the field.Itll be a big plus having him out there. Hes a veteran football player whos been in tough situations, so hell be ready to go when hes out there.New England will need all the help it can get to slow down Green, who has been quarterback Andy Daltons top weapon and deep threat since the two entered the league together in 2011.Despite being hampered by an early season toe injury, Green has hauled in 12 catches for 233 yards and a touchdown, and he is coming off the best season of his four-year career. The three-time Pro Bowler had 98 receptions for 1,426 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, and is a threat to score nearly every time he touches the ball.A.J. Green is one of the best receivers in the league, Revis said. Ive got a lot of respect for him.New Englands defence had garnered plenty of early season respect, too, although that perception may have swayed slightly following the debacle against the Chiefs. That was a long time ago to Revis, though. It was an embarrassment, yes it was, but at the same time, youve got to put it in the past, he said. Weve got 12 more games left. If we can focus on those 12 more games, we can do what we need to do in those 12 games. Its a 12-game season. ' ' '
