San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Monahan scored the game-winning goal 24 seconds into overtime to lift the Calgary Flames to a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Paul Byron won a faceoff back to Mark Giordano, who skated across the blue line and backhanded a shot on net. Monahan was there in front to slip the rebound pass Antti Niemi for the win. Lucky enough it bounced right on my stick and I had an open net, Monahan said. Joe Colborne tallied a goal and an assist, Dennis Wideman and Jiri Hudler also scored and Giordano supplied two assists for the Flames, who won their third straight game. Joni Ortio made 19 saves and has now won all three of his NHL starts. Joe Thornton, Logan Couture and Melker Karlsson all lit the lamp and Niemi stopped 19 shots for the Sharks, who had won their previous two games. Calgary got off to a quick start as Wideman blasted a shot through the pads of a screened Niemi 40 seconds into the game. Colborne made it a 2-0 game with a short-handed marker five minutes later. After the Sharks coughed up the puck in their own zone, Colborne took a pass from Matt Stajan, moved in alone on Niemi and cut back from his backhand to his forehand to beat the netminder. We got what we deserved, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of the loss. Were probably fortunate we got (a point). The start was unacceptable. There are nights where we dont execute. Sometimes its half the team. Tonight it was the whole team. San Jose used a quick goal of its own to cut the deficit in half as Couture snapped a shot home from the left circle 12 seconds into the middle frame. Just over two minutes later, Thornton tied the game with a wrist shot on the power play and Karlsson put the Sharks ahead after he deflected Joe Pavelskis pass into the net nine minutes into the second. A video review upheld the goal as it was determined the puck went in off Karlssons skate without a distinct kicking motion. Calgary evened it back up at 3-3 after Mikael Backlunds shot deflected off a Sharks skate straight to Hudler, who cut across the slot and beat Niemis glove with a quick shot at 11:32. Patrick Marleau had a chance to put San Jose ahead on a breakaway with 10:45 to play, but Ortio snagged his wrister to keep the game tied. Vargas (8-3) allowed four singles and two walks while striking out five, allowing only two runners from a diluted Twins lineup to reach second base. Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson hit RBI singles in the second inning against Kevin Correia (4-10), and that was all Vargas needed. With Joe Mauer missing, placed on the disabled list before the game because of a strained muscle on his right side, the Twins didnt cause Vargas any trouble. They were shut out for the sixth time this season and lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. The 42-year-old Ibanez signed Monday with the Royals, the team that first gave him a regular spot in the lineup all the way back in 2001. He had two hits and two runs in this game, including the solo shot to right field in the eighth. Ibanez was released by the Los Angeles Angels last month. Eric Hosmer, who walked three times, added an RBI single in the ninth inning for insurance. With rookie Yordano Ventura and now Danny Duffy joining the veteran trio of Vargas, James Shields and Jeremy Guthrie, who are all in the top 10 in the league in innings pitched, the Royals have a deep rotation that can keep them in the post-season chase all summer. Vargas improved to 4-1 in his last eight starts, seveen of which have counted as quality: six innings or more and three runs or less.dddddddddddd Vargas also became the first Royals left-hander to win eight games or more before the All-Star break since Chris George in 2003. Correia lowered his ERA to 4.95, the only time hes had that mark under 5.00 since his first start of the year, after surrendering six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out three. The right-hander completed exactly six innings for the fifth consecutive turn, and he has allowed two runs or fewer in four of those starts. But the second inning was the one that hurt, when five batters reached. He struck out Billy Butler to finish the frame with the bases loaded. Fresh off a win at the Heritage Classic in Vancouver two days earlier, the Senators should have had some momentum for this game against the lowly Oilers. Instead – in what turned out to be a damn good audition before the trade deadline – Ales Hemsky scored twice to pace the Oilers to a 3-2 victory. 10) March 15th – 5-4 overtime loss at MTL Its still a little too soon to talk about this game.
